The project combined all the museum’s collections on one site, provided archive storage, publicly viewable storage, conservation resources, better research access and improved galleries and temporary exhibition space.
The works comprised the demolition of various extensions and ancillary buildings at the existing museum, refurbishment of the retained existing buildings and construction of a new extension comprising a basement, ground floor and two upper storeys. There were severe constraints on access to the site.
Shortlisted in the Leisure & Tourism Project of the Year and Heritage Project of the Year categories at the Michelmores Property Awards 2021.
